For
Parents
Once
the province of doctors, technicians, and other professional
people, pagers (or "beepers" as they're sometimes called)
are a staple method of modern communication. It is up to you,
the parent to decide whether or not your children should have
a pager. If you have decided to allow your children to have
a pager, we'd just like to offer you, the parent the benefit
of our years of experience, which may be helpful to you in
guiding your children.
More
and more teenagers, and pre-teens are carrying, and using
pagers. For the parents who approve of the use of pagers,
we suggest discussing their use with your children, and setting
up some guidelines for using their pagers. Although we could
never include every guideline for every use, we do offer parents
some ideas at the end of this page, which they may discuss
with their children.
The
first parent's rule for children having a pager is "you must
get back to me when I page you". If you make this clear to
your children, and tell them that it is a condition for having
a pager, they'll get back to you. Even though having a pager
is a privilege, not a right, it will help you keep your children
honest because you can track them down. Just remind your children
that there is no excuse for not calling back.
You
can get a pager for your children for less than a cellular
telephone, and the monthly charges are a fraction of the cost
of the monthly cell phone bills (no surprise $300, $400
or $500 monthly cell phone bills). If you get one of our
alphanumeric, or 2 Way pagers, your children will be able
to respond to your PC or to your alphanumeric or 2 Way pager
without the need for a telephone, and the cost can be as little
as $10.95 per pager per month. And your children will not
be spending limitless hours on the phone.
The
decision of whether or not to allow your children to have
a pager, rests solely with you their parents. If you do decide
to let your children have a pager, we'd like to suggest a
few thoughts for you, and them. While these are not exhaustive
maybe they'll help you fashion your own rules for your children.
-
Do not use the pager while at school. Turn it off while
at school. (If your children use one of our alphanumeric
pagers, they'll get all their messages when they turn it
back on)
-
DO NOT USE THE PAGER WHILE DRIVING! Either pull over
to a safe spot, and then deal with your message, or preferably
wait until you get to where you're going, if it is not very
far, before using the pager.
-
If one of your parents pages you, you must get back to them
within a reasonable period of time. Only you and your children
can determine what is reasonable.
- Tell
your children that you're allowing them to have a pager
because you trust them, and please ask them to not abuse
that trust.
-
As a result of #4, trust your children, and don't show that
you really don't trust them by paging them every half hour.
Page them for the reasons you, yourself, would want to be
paged.
-
You, the parent, should keep a spare battery or two, so
that you can always know that your child's pager will work.
-
Remember, like cell phones, or any other wireless device,
pagers don't work everywhere. If you tell your child that
you are going to page them around a certain time, and they
do not get a page, it might mean that there is some form
of interference blocking the signal. Tell them to call you
if they don't get a page from you by a certain time.

we can be of any help to you on any of these issues, please
